Brindley Building New Entrance
The brief was to design a new signal entrance and cafe space for the Brindley Building at Staffordshire Universities, Stoke Campus.
There were site constraints due to not being able to build along the elevation to each side of the proposal due to obstructing existing windows. This constraint has dictated the plan of the scheme and forms a projection of the existing projecting wall, which contains no openings. The nature of this meant that when entering from the main road, the existing entrance was further obstructed as opposed to being highlighted. In order to overcome this, the glazed North-West facade curves towards the existing entrance forming an entrance channel.
The form is clad in red ceramic tiles linking it to the universities signature colour and was designed using the notion of a contemporary ‘seat’, an icon of cafe culture. The fluidity of this envelope, which houses a projector screen, will allow the scheme to merge seamlessly with future plans for landscaping around the Brindley Building entrance, whilst ensuring the Stoke campus has a strong identity.
