Sutherland Institute

The Practice was commissioned to refurbish and convert the Grade II Listed building, retaining the
existing library and creating business starter units with associated support and conference facilities on the upper floors.

To enable access for all, a new lift was required that would minimise impact on the historic fabric. Our
solution was to insert a new fully glazed lift and enclosed 'atrium' into a lightwell at the rear of the
building. A glass bridge was employed to allow access to the lecture theatre and automatic external blinds were fitted to the atrium to combat solar gain.

The existing building was carefully cleaned and repaired with particular attention given to the impressive terracotta frieze over the library entrance.
