Morrey Private Dwelling

In line with the Practice's mission to advance sustainable architecture, Managing Director David Morrey has recently converted his house in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

The project involved retaining, refurbishing and extending an exising building and creating new external terraces using the existing and new retaining walls.

The existing building was a former coffin makers workshop on a steeply sloping site adjacent to the high street in Cheadle and as such was a brown field site in a residential area.

The exsting workshop has been retained and coverted to provide living areas on three seperate levels, with access on two to enclosed private courtyards. The building has also been extended in a single storey wing accommodating the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms around the upper courtyard. The new extension also has two mono-pitched grass roofs which blend into the surrounding hillside.
